Kornél Mundruczó will direct a film on Elephant Man. Filming will begin in June 2020. The Hungarian filmmaker, Prize of the international criticism in Cannes for Delta and Prize Un certain regard for White God, will tell the life of Joseph Merrick, aka Elephant Man, who has already been the subject of a film, in 1980, by David Lynch (produced by Mel Brooks, eight times Oscar nominated, César winner for best foreign film), and a play, recently reassembled on the boards of New York (with Bradley Cooper) and Parisian ( with Béatrice Dalle and Joey Starr).

Like Beauty and the Beast, the screenplay will focus on the unhappy love story of Joseph, a disfigured man, and a young woman who is assigned to care for him, in a residence where he was housed for the last weeks of its existence. The filmmaker returns to the fantastic (The moon of Jupiter in competition at Cannes in 2017, Tender son - The Frankenstein Project in 2010).

Kornél Mundruczó was searched for Anglo-Saxon producers for this film: Straight Up Films (Jane got a Gun) and Phoenix Films (Shutter Island, Black Swan).
