Cannes - full of attractions not only during the film festival

Being on the Cote d'Azur, it's impossible not to visit Cannes. The city has many charming corners and famous places, it is worth devoting at least a day of sightseeing to it. Or maybe we decide to stay here longer?

In Cannes there is one of the most famous pedestrian streets on the Cote d'Azur - Croisette boulevard. This avenue shaded with palm trees and pine trees is the most fashionable promenade on the Riviera. It is here that famous people of the world have left their hands on the sidewalk - including Poles, including Andrzej Wajda and Roman Polański. La Croisette is filled with cafes and designer stores.

In the vicinity of the boulevard there are the famous luxury hotels, where cinema stars live during the Cannes festival. The most famous of them are Martinez and Carlton. The latter enjoys great fame, also because of the excellent cuisine.

There are two islands in the bay of Cannes (Baie de Cannes). On one of them, Ile Sainte-Marguerite - a man in an iron mask was imprisoned. His cell can be visited in Fort St Marguerite, today called Musee de la Mer.

Understandably, the obligatory point of visiting Cannes should be the passage of Avenue of Stars to the Festival Palace, where every year in May the prestigious Film Festival takes place.

Those who want to learn more about the history of Cannes should go to the statue of English Lord Brougham, who made Cannes famous among his aristocratic friends. In the 1830s he came to Cannes by accident. He immediately fell in love with this picturesque town. After returning to the British Isles, he began to tell the local aristocracy about a wonderful, secluded place on the Cote d'Azur, i.e. the Cote d'Azur. Lord Brougham has spent most of the last 30 years of his life in Cannes. In 1848 - without success - he even applied for French citizenship and a place in the National Assembly. He was buried at the Cimetiere du Grand Jas in Cannes.

Enthusiasts of monuments and history will probably go for a walk in the old town and climb the hill where the castle from the 11th century - Chateaux de la Castre - and the church of Notre-Dame are located. Construction of the temple began in 1521 and lasted over a hundred years, it was completed in 1627. This church is dedicated to Our Lady of Hope.

In this church we will find unique organs. These are large Italian organs from Pavia, dating from 1857. The neo-Gothic sideboard was made in France. They were restored many times - in 1921, 1939, 1962, 1974. Their complete renovation took place in 2014.

A must of course is a visit to the Marche Forville market. It is here that one of the best Provencal fairs in the region is organized. We will get cheese, meats, tinctures, wines, spices, sweets, fruits and vegetables. Of course, as befits Provence, there are a lot of lavender products: oils, soaps, dried lavender in bags, etc.
