Cannes 2019: Golden Palm for Alain Delon

The Golden Palm for lifetime achievement will be handed over to 83-year-old Alain Delon this year by the organizers of the Cannes Festival. However, this award raises some controversy.

Alain Delon is an icon of French cinema and no one will take his output from him. However, voices have been raised that the actor has recently indulged in sexist, homophobic and anti-Semitic statements.

Activists of the Osez le Feminisme movement recall that in an interview he admitted that he had "slapped several women" in his life. In turn, in a 2015 television conversation he said that he did not care about same-sex marriage, but categorically opposes such couples having the right to adopt children. "I have a problem with times when the laws of nature are disregarded," he said. Critics also reprimand him for his affection for the ultra-left Marine Le Pen party and the lasting friendship with Jean-Marie Le Pen.

Still, Alain Delon has an extraordinary page in the history of French cinema. He is an artist who has starred in over 80 films. He created wonderful creations in "Eclipse" by Michelangelo Antoni, "Rocco and his brothers" and "Leopard" by Luchino Visconti, in "Samurai" and "In the Circle of Evil" by Jean-Pierre Melville, "Amazing Stories" by Louis Malle , "In Full Sun" by Rene Clement, "The New Wave" by Jean-Luc Godard. Delon played in dramas, melodramas, costume films and comedies, but many movie fans associate primarily with reckless roles in criminal images, in which he appeared mainly in the 70s and 80s.

In the last twenty years, Delon rarely appears on the screen, and if so, rather in television productions. In 2005, Jacques Chirac awarded him the Legion of Honor for his contribution to French cinema.
