Cannes 2019: in the evening we will meet the winner of the Golden Palm
"Pain and Glow" by Pedro Almodóvar, "Once upon a time ... in Hollywood" by Quentin Tarantino and "Portrait of a Girl on Fire" by Céline Sciammy - these are some of the 21 films participating in the main competition of the 72nd International Film Festival in Cannes. We will meet the winner of the Golden Palm on Saturday evening.
"Once upon a time ... in Hollywood" Quentin Tarantino is typed as a potential winner of the Golden Palm among others by "That Shelf". Critics assess him as "historically questionable, thematically brilliant", "thrilling, dazzlingly filmed" movie. They also emphasize that this is a "provocative masterpiece full of black humor." The film, which takes place in 1969, tells the story of the series star Rick Dalton (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) and his colleague, stuntman Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) - both want to make a career in the film industry. They also dream about making friends with their neighbors Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie) and Roman Polański (Rafał Zawierucha). According to Tarantino, "Once upon a time in Hollywood" is a "love letter" to Hollywood from his youth, and at the same time "an ode to the cinema."
Reviewers were also delighted by the film "Portrait of a Girl on Fire" by Céline Sciammy, who is one of four directors nominated for the Golden Palm this year. The story takes place in the eighteenth century, and heroes are the painter Marianne (Noemie Merlant) and the young lady Heloise (Adele Haenel) portrayed by her, who fall in love with each other. Critics agree that Sciamma's work is an "elegant, calm, providing aesthetic experience" image that talks about delicacy and beauty. They also appreciate the acting of Haenel and Merlant.
Jim Jarmusch's comedy "Dead Do Not Die" received less stars about the fight of policemen (Bill Murray, Adam Driver, Chloë Sevigny) and a funeral worker (Tilda Swinton) with zombies eager for human blood and various things they liked in life. "Small, but edible bloody candy" - rated Jarmusch's painting "The Hollywood Reporter". The reviews also stated that the film was "laconic and not quite alive despite many funny moments and cast from list A".
"Mektoub, My Love: Intermezzo" by Abdellatif Kechiche scored mainly negative. It is a continuation of the movie "Mektoub, My Love: Canto Uno" based on the book "La Blessure, la vraie" by François Bégaudeau describing the relationship between Ophelie (played by Ophelie Bau) and Amina (Shain Boumedine). As emphasized in the reviews, the film is "exhausting" and shows "endless, boring scenes of flirting and dancing in the bar". "This is a series of photos of butts" - summarized in "Variety". Stephen Miller rated "Mektoub, My Love: Intermezzo" as "the worst film in the main competition". The Tunisian-French director has also aroused controversy in the past. His film "Adela's Life - Chapter 1 and 2" was criticized by for "pornographic" erotic scenes in the cinema in recent decades. The actresses Adèle Exarchopoulos and Léa Seydoux appearing in it in one of the interviews accused Kechiche of outrageous work behavior and announced that they would never appear in his films again.
The main competition of the 72nd Cannes International Film Festival also screened, among others films: "Young Ahmed" brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, "Misery" Ladja Ly, "Atlantics" Mati Diop, "The Wild Goose Lake" Diao Yinana, "A Hidden Life" by Terrence Malick and "The Whistlers "Corneliu Porumboiu.
The jury of the main competition included: Alejandro González Iñárritu (chairman), actresses Elle Fanning and Maimouna N'Diaye, director and screenwriter Kelly Reichardt and Alice Rohrwacher, creator of the comics Enki Bilal as well as directors and screenwriters Paweł Pawlikowski, Robin Camph and Norgos & Yorgos. ;
