Cannes, not for disturbing cruise ships

The authorities of the French resort, the country's fourth largest port, announced as part of the fight for air quality to introduce in 2020 a ban on calling the most disturbing cruise ships.

The ban will apply to units that do not respect the 0.1 percent sulfur limit in & nbsp; fuel, and authorities may prohibit the disembarkation of some passengers in a city famous for the film festival. & nbsp; - This is not aimed at cruise liners, but at environmental pollution, - explained Mayor David Lisnard in an interview with Reuters Television.

According to the EU's clean air policy, the sulfur limit is already in force in the Baltic, North Sea and ports of the English Channel, and can be introduced in the Mediterranean.

Cruise ships use heavy diesel fuel, which contains about two thousand times more sulfur oxide than ordinary diesel (diesel) oil - says German pollution analyst Axel Friedrich. & Nbsp; - We will no longer accept passengers from cruise ships polluting the environment - said Mayor Cannes.

The development of cruise shipping in geometric progress is heavily criticized by residents of cities known for tourist attractions, but also increasingly considered an environmental threat. Three months ago, the largest Italian organization of ecologists said that Venice should be placed on the UN list of endangered cities, and cruise ships should not be allowed to enter the bay to prevent an ecological disaster.

According to data from the International Association of Cruise Lines (CLIA), the main organization in this sector, this year 30 million travelers will sail for pleasure with nearly 300 ships. Ten years ago there were 17.8 million.

In July, the Norwegian shipowner Cruise Line Holdings, which accounts for 40 percent of the maritime traffic in Cannes, signed an agreement with the city authorities committing that its ships will be more environmentally friendly.
